Military Leak May Have Tainted Cranberry Bogs

The Pentagon announced Friday that it was investigating damage caused to cranberry bogs by a jet fuel chemical additive apparently leaking from a military reservation on Cape Cod. The problem is with bogs near the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The Pentagon said it would seek congressional authority to reimburse cranberry growers for any financial losses from ruined fruit. The Boston Globe reported Thursday that around $240,000 worth of the berries in bogs in the town of Mashpee would have to be destroyed because of damage from ethylene dibromide on cranberries. WASHINGTON Protesters Want Inquiry On Police Brutality Claims Supporters of a man who says New York police officers tortured him marched on the Justice Department on Friday to demand a nationwide investigation of what they called "an alarming increase in police brutality." "It is a problem that is eating away at the core of our country," said Samuel Nicolas, cousin and spokesman for Abner Louima, who is still recovering from his injuries last month inside a Brooklyn police station bathroom. Four officers have been charged in the incident. Nicolas called on President Bill Clinton and Congress to address the issue of police brutality. "I can't understand," Nicolas said. "How can you remain silent on an issue like this?" OREGON Questions On Plane Crash Cloud General's Confirmation The death of 10 Air Force reservists whose cargo plane plunged into the Pacific last year has come back to haunt the armed services, delaying a vote on the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said Thursday that he was blocking the confirmation vote for Gen. Henry H. Shelton as the new Joint Chiefs chairman until Wyden got a better explanation for the crash that killed the Oregon-based reservists. …
