Former Lover of Cisneros Indicted over Home Loan

Linda Jones, the one-time mistress of former Housing Secretary Henry Cisneros, has been indicted on charges that she took part in a money laundering scheme and misled a grand jury.

The indictment Friday was the outcome of an investigation by special counsel David Barrett, initiated by Attorney General Janet Reno more than two years ago.

Jones' sister, Patsy Wooten, 55, and brother-in-law, Allen Wooten, 58, were also indicted on the same charges, except for eight obstruction counts that name only Jones. Cisneros, who was not named in the indictment, is the subject of an investigation into allegations that he lied to the FBI about payments he made to Jones. Cisneros served as housing secretary during President Bill Clinton's first term and is now president of the Univision television network. The Wootens are accused of acting as straw purchasers when they obtained a loan and bought a house in Lubbock in early 1993 for Jones. Prosecutors say the Wootens lied to Plains National Bank of Lubbock by claiming they were going to live in the home. By 1995, Jones had become unable to keep up with mortgage payments after Cisneros and others stopped providing money, the indictment says. …
