The CYO/Bob Guelker Memorial Boys' High School Soccer Tournament next week will include 54 games in three divisions.

But one game - scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Monday on Field No. 2 at Anheuser-Busch Conference and Sports Centre - figures to draw more at tention than most in the 43rd annual tournament. That game, in pool play of the World Cup bracket, features Vianney against Triad.

The Knights, ranked fourth in the Post-Dispatch small-schools poll, are coached by Mike Villa, who spent the previous 23 seasons at Vianney. In that time, his teams posted a 463-107-66 record and won seven state titles. Villa, a Vianney grad, was relieved of his coaching duties last spring and took a coaching/teaching position at Triad. Under new coach Dave Gauvain, Vianney is 5-1 and ranked second among area large schools. "When I saw the quote earlier in the year, where Mike said that he'd love the opportunity to coach against Vianney, I figured our chances of being matched up in this tournament were pretty well destined," Gauvain said. "At this point, I don't even think my players are aware of the game - and that's good. Right now, they're focused on the games we have to play this week." Villa said: "I'm sure I'll have some mixed feelings. I was at Vianney a long time and I want to see those kids do well. At the same time, though, my job as coach here is try to do everything I can to help Triad beat Vianney. "Realistically, this tournament is going to be a real challenge for us. I have some good players on this team, but we're not nearly as deep as Vianney. And we have to play CBC Monday in the first round, so we know that we'll have our work cut out for us."
