Mark McGwire's news conference to announce his new contract was proceeding without a hitch. Then the Cardinals first baseman paused for about half a minute and broke into tears while trying to discuss the new Mark McGwire Charitable Foundation for sexually and physically abused children.

When asked about his breakdown, McGwire said he had had one close friend who was a victim of abuse, who introduced him to another man, also a victim.

"I don't want to name names," McGwire said. "They're fine. But when you find out how people develop as human beings and you find out how scarred they are, there's a lot of pain that they're not aware of. "When you're a child, things happen to you - whether it's sexually abused or physically abused - you always have that scar and sometimes you don't have that development as a normal kid growing up. "I'm at a time in my life when I want to help them out. I will do everything in my power to start my foundation to help them out. …
