Cafe Loses Bid for License to Serve Beer, Wine

Aesop's Cafe in Clayton will continue to be an alcohol-free establishment, at least for now.

The Board of Aldermen has voted 4-3 to deny Aesop's request to allow beer and wine. Aesop's owner, Sharon Hall, says she will challenge the board's decision in court.

Hall says the board will not grant her request because her establishment does not make enough money. "Every time they make a suggestion, I make a change," Hall said. "What they are making me do is jump though hoops, hoping I get tired of it. I think it is just that I am not a big name; I'm not the St. Louis Bread Company." Aesop's is on the north side of Clayton Road between CBC high school and Big Bend Boulevard. Aesop's shares an alley with several residential complexes on Alamo Street. Residents on Alamo and Clayton Road are concerned about littering and parking problems in the neighborhood. They fear that the expanded menu will add to the problems.
