Salukis Are Paired with Northwestern in Preseason Nit

Southern Illinois-Carbondale's basketball squad is one of 16 teams invited to the Preseason National Invitation Tournament, which begins Nov. 14.

The Salukis, who were 14-14 last season, will play at Northwestern in the first round. The winner will face Clemson or Tennessee Tech on Nov. 16. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Nov. 20 and 21.

Also in the field are Connecticut, Alabama, Western Kentucky, Nebraska, Furman, George Mason, Holy Cross, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), New Mexico, Santa Clara and St. Joseph's (Pa.)

Illinois basketball standout Ashley Berggren is one of 42 players invited to participate in the Women's National Team Trials this weekend at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The event, which runs through Monday, will allow for the selection of separate 12-member teams for the U.S.A. Women's World University Games and the U.S.A. R. Williams Jones Cup.

Of the 42 invitees, 37 have previous U.S.A. Basketball experience, including 30 who have competed for the country. Twenty-two of those invited were named first-team all-conference, with seven of them capturing conference player of the year honors.

Among those invited: Shannon Johnson of the American Basketball League's Columbus Quest; Connecticut's Nykesha Sales; Kara Wolters of the ABL's New England Blizzard; Iowa's Amy Herrig; Kate Starbird of the ABL's Seattle Reign; Georgia's Kedra Holland-Corn; Penn State's Angie Potthoff; Old Dominion's Nyree Roberts; Purdue's Jannon Roland; UConn's Paige Sauer; and Stanford's Olympia Scott.

The Illinois soccer team will face several St. Louis-area teams in its inaugural season this year. The Illini's season opener will be at home against St. Louis University on Sept. 2. After a Sept. 5 game at Loyola-Chicago, the Illini will travel to Quincy University on Sept. 10 and then to Washington University on Sept. 13 and 14 for the Wash U Tournament. …
