The Skinny on Radke: Yes, He Can Pitch

Article excerpt

Stripped to the waist, Brad Radke is a sight to behold. He's built like a No. 2 pencil. Only skinnier.

When he puts his clothes on, he looks different. He looks like a No. 2 pencil with clothes on.

"This guy is awful unassuming looking," said Terry Ryan, the Twins' general manager. "In street clothes, he doesn't look big at all. But on the mound, I don't know if it's the record or numbers, he looks bigger."

There is something to that. On the mound, you never would think of picking up Radke and using him to write a letter.

On the mound, he is impressive to watch, if not to look at.

He sure looked good Monday night, going seven innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs while beating the Toronto Blue Jays, 9-3, for his 12th consecutive victory.

And while tying Roger Clemens for the American League lead in victories with 16, Radke was out there in a loose-fitting uniform that hides his pencil-thin frame. Once he starts pitching, though, you forget he resembles a writing instrument.

That's the thing about pitchers. You can't judge them by the way they look.

Just like Slim Radke. If you're scoring, he's listed at 6-2, 185 pounds. But that's only if Chuck Knoblauch hops onto his back when Radke is weighing himself.

"It's what's inside the body type that means a hell of a lot more than what's outside," said Twins third baseman Ron Coomer. "Look at Brad."

We have. If Olive Oyl had a kid brother, he would be built like Radke.

"Some guys are built. Some guys aren't," Radke said. "As long as you've got endurance, that's all you need."

Radke has endurance. He has gone at least seven innings in his past seven starts and hasn't pitched fewer than six innings in his past 14 games.

"What makes Brad Radke good is, he's as mentally strong as anybody," Coomer said. "Brad's not that assuming physical guy."

It makes up for that less-than-awesome physique. …
