Bond Issue, Rollback Waiver Go Down to Defeat at Polls Chief Vows to Adhere to Financial Constraints

Voters in the Wright City School District defeated on Tuesday a $5 million bond issue and a permanent Proposition C rollback waiver of about 45 cents to build a new middle school.

The bond issue was rejected by a vote of 509-345, and the rollback wai ver lost by 491-343.

The bond issue needed approval by two-thirds of those voting. A simple majority was needed to approve the permanent rollback of taxes.

Voters in Lincoln County approved a bond issue by a vote of 47-36 and approved the rollback waiver 45-38. But their positive numbers were overwhelmed by voters in Warren County, who defeated the bond issue 473-298 and the rollback waiver by 453-298.

Superintendent Ronald Kettler, who joined the district July 1, said he presumed reassessment had a bearing on the defeat of the tax measures.

"I think because reassessment goes up that the district typically gets an amount beyond and above (what it had been getting)," he said. Kettler said he believed people sometimes confuse assessment with taxes. …
