A young girl is home safe after being abducted Wednesday by her father from a parking lot in Clayton and taken to Kansas City, police said.

The girl, 7, was rescued late Thursday after her father - Michael S. Ridgley, 28, of Pacific - led police on a car chase and then a foot pursuit into some woods in Independence.

Ridgley was charged Friday with parental kidnapping, a felony punishable by up to three years in prison. He was still at large.

Clayton Police Chief Richard Morris gave this account:

About 2 p.m. Wednesday, the girl and her mother, Paula R. Ridgley, went to Clayton to get a restraining order against Michael Ridgley. The couple had been separated for about two months and the suspect had threatened to kill himself, his wife and his daughter.

The mother parked her car in a lot near Forsyth Boulevard and Bemiston Avenue. Michael Ridgley came up to them, grabbed the girl and fled. …
