Lower Gas Prices Expected to Increase Travel ; AAA: Local Motorists Pay Least Amount of Metro Cities

Helped by falling gas prices - which could drop to $3 per gallon this fall in some states - the AAA Motor Club is predicting an increase in the number of Americans traveling during the Fourth of July holiday. According to AAA, more than 42 million people are expected to travel more than 50 miles during the holiday "weekend," which is defined as July 3-8 because Independence Day falls on a Wednesday this year. That is almost a 5 percent increase over last year.

While travelers will continue to "economize" to save money, AAA officials said travelers credit the long holiday weekend as the main reason for taking off, but once on the road, they will be greeted by lower gas prices compared to both last year and last month.

Nationwide, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is about $3.40 as of Tuesday morning. According to AAA, that is a 10-cent decrease from last week for prices have fallen more than 18 cents during the last month. …
