Down here at the intersection of Walnut and Heidelbach, we're hoping that you're enjoying your bacon and eggs - or, if you're seriously supporting Mayor Lloyd Winnecke's healthy agenda, your yogurt and fruit - as you read the Sunday Courier & Press. That would mean many of your days - and the days of the hardworking people who produce and deliver the newspaper - are going better than a week ago.

July did not dawn bright and beautiful at the newspaper, where what could go wrong did go wrong with our production and delivery process. The result was that most of our customers got their paper late, if at all, last Sunday. And when thousands attempted to reach our customer service department, the phone system basically shut down.

With printing press supervisors working feverishly to fix the problem in the pressroom, our internal communications system failed, too. So it was pushing 9 a.m. before we posted the problem at courierpress.com and on our Facebook page.

In short, we failed to do what we promise to do every day - to serve the community. It doesn't matter how much news we pack into the paper - and last Sunday was a good one - if we don't get it to our readers.

I'll admit that when I went out to my Courier & Press slot before 7 a.m. last week, my entire paper was there. According to the circulation folks, I should credit both luck of the draw and the timing of my carrier. But even that proved to be a problem, because I was unaware of what was happening elsewhere.

As do must situations, this one started small, with a broken screw. By the time that was identified and rectified, production was nearly four hours behind. Instead of papers rolling off the presses at 2 a.m. to be delivered to our carriers, that didn't happen until after 6 a.m.

The papers then have to be bundled and loaded on to trucks which take them to designated pickup spots for our individual carriers. …
