When we consider the past half-century, we think first of the big headline grabbers. The World Trade Center. The Murrah Federal Building. Neil Armstrong's lunar footprints. The end of the Cold War. Vietnam.

But when we have Sherman turn the dial on the Wayback Machine precisely 50 years, we find that 1962 had a lot to say about life in 2012. It was, among other things, the most important year the retail industry has ever seen.

But before we get to that ...

At the beginning of 1962, no one had heard of The Beatles, who auditioned for Decca Records on New Year's Day. On Jan. 5, Polydor released the first album on which the group could be heard. It was called My Bonnie, and the Liverpool lads were credited as Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers. Things worked out for them.

The Rolling Stones also hit the scene in 1962. Things worked out for them, too.

NASA launched Ranger 3, which was to transmit pictures of the moon for 10 minutes before crashing into its subject. NASA missed the moon by 22,000 miles.

Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single game, Marilyn Monroe died, The Hulk and Spider-Man each debuted, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that nude photos of men were not pornographic. The justices also ruled that mandatory prayer in public schools was unconstitutional.

Trinidad, Tobago, Jamaica, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Algeria all gained independence, at least one to the considerable disappointment of the French.

Civil war erupted in Yemen. Some things never change, but NASA's aim eventually improved.

The pope excommunicated Fidel Castro, and there was a missile crisis with Cuba.

Clint Black, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Axl Rose and Garth Brooks were born on successive days in February.

Henry Joseph Nasiff Jr., better known to Howard Stern's fans as Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf, was born in Falls River, Mass. …
