When you're a big company, you can have a big impact. And a big impact is exactly what Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma strives to accomplish through its support of more than a dozen health and wellness organizations, all geared toward improving the health of the state's residents.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma's size allows it to put corporate muscle behind these charitable organizations, which in turn serve people in every age group. Employees who volunteer are known as the "Blue Corps," and in 2011 they logged a total of 2,260 volunteer hours for organizations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) has established a corporate culture that combines two key elements - volunteerism and community wellness," said Paula Huck, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma director of community affairs. "Through volunteer hours, corporate grants and donations, BCBSOK and its employees are always prepared to step forward to help make a difference in the lives of Oklahoma's citizens and communities. And as employees engage in volunteer efforts, they are increasingly aware of and passionate towards the health issues in our communities."

A key program is Healthy Kids, Healthy Families, a three-year initiative designed to improve the health and wellness of children by partnering with nonprofit agencies that offer sustainable, measurable programs for families in the areas of nutrition education, physical activity, supporting safe environments and disease prevention and management.

In addition, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma in 2011 donated a $100,000 matching grant plus $40,000 in employee donations to the Caring Foundation to support operations of five Caring vans in Oklahoma. …
