India Plans to Purchase $1 Billion in Oil Supplies / Governor Told

representatives of 10 Oklahoma oil and gas firms that his nation plans to b uy $1 billion worth of oil and gas equipment and supplies over the next five years, Nigh said Wednesday.

"Most of that will be in joint ventures," Nigh said in a telephone news conference from Madras, India.

Nigh is in India as part of a 17-day foreign trade mission that has taken him through The People's Republic of China and will include business meetings in London.

"About 40 percent of their oil and gas purchases will be equipment," Nigh said.

Nigh and a group of 12 Oklahomans, representing 10 different oil and gas firms, met for about 90 minutes Wednesday with India's minister of petroleum, Nigh said.

There were no assurances that any or all of those intended purchases will be from Oklahoma firms, Nigh said.

"But they're very pleased that Oklahoma is paying attention to India," he said.

"They have told me that I am the first governor to lead a trade mission to India. They've just discovered oil here and they're doing some on-shore and off-shore drilling," Nigh said.

Nigh made a special point of telling reporters that the Oklahoma oil and gas firms' representatives had paid their own travel expenses.

"In January, one of the members of the delegation came to India. He got a 10-minute audience after a wait of three days," Nigh said.

"When they came this time and they learned the governor was with them, we got in right away. They spent an hour and a half with us," Nigh said.

The 10 Oklahoma oil and gas firms with representatives in India this week are: Petroleum Well Logging Inc. of Oklahoma City; Downing Wellhead Equipment Inc. …
