Mercy Health Center Installs World's First Biplane Angioscope

Economic growth may be a bit flat, what with negative growth still dragging hard on segments of industry. In Oklahoma City, however, the health care sector keeps humming along.

At Mercy Health Center in northwest Oklahoma City, the acquisition of a sophisticated new imaging system, itself a big ticket item, will be housed in a special $1.5 million suite. The hospital imported a team of engineers from West Germany to work with local professionals during the three months it took to install the equipment. The suite covers 2,800 square feet.

What demanded all this special effort was an angioscope - a biplane angioscope (BICOR) now described as the first of its kind in the world. A Mercy Health Center task force was sent to Sweden to inspect the BICOR prototype at Siemens Medical Systems Inc. in Stockholm, a manufacturer of medical X-ray equipment.

The BICOR gives doctors a view of two planes simultaneously as they search for problems in the flow of blood to the heart.

A patient table suspended from the ceiling was created at Siemens with input from two Mercy physicians - a cardiologist and a radiologist.

"Better access makes the angioplasty procedure more comfortable and safer for the patient," explained Mercy's Fred Lybrand III, a cardiologist.

With BIGOR's two planes, physicians are able to achieve more precise localization of the catheter as it is inserted into the coronary artery. Using independent controls operated by foot pedals, thedoctor or technologist can change views swiftly and smoothly.

Sources at Mercy say the BICOR can perform a variety of coronary procedures, but the hospital's physicians intend to use the equipment mostly for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), a procedure seen as more appropriate when there is a narrowing of one or more coronary arteries.

In some cases, it can be used as an alternative to coronary bypass surgery or to medical therapy. A double lumen balloon catheter - inside a guided catheter - is inserted into the femoral artery and advanced into the coronary artery in coronary angioplasty. …
