ST. LOUIS > Two lanes to be open in Highway 40 work zone in morning rush - The Missouri Department of Transportation says it will have two lanes of westbound Highway 40 (Interstate 64) open downtown by 6 a.m. today. Road work had closed the westbound lanes downtown over the weekend. Crews have been working on the lanes west of the Poplar Street Bridge because deterioration of the road was worse than expected, according to MoDOT. More than 30 workers have been using jackhammers to remove weak spots in the concrete deck on the closed section between Broadway and 21st street.

MoDOT briefly opened a lane of traffic through the area Monday and Tuesday mornings, but closed the section again at 10 a.m. each day.

Crews will return to the original construction schedule today. One lane through the project area will be open around the clock; another will be open from 3 to 10 a.m. daily but close at 10 a.m. for work. (From staff reports)

"I would like to commend the St. Clair County trustee committee's efforts to keep derelict buildings from hurting our community," Kern said.

This is the second time the county has torn down this many structures at a time this year, the county chairman said. The last time was in January, in the Park Field Terrace neighborhood in Cahokia. (Special to the Post-Dispatch)
