ST. LOUIS - A man was fatally shot and a police officer responding to a report of a domestic dispute was wounded Thursday, police said.

The gunfire erupted about 7 p.m. after police were called to a home in the 7000 block of Mitchell Avenue.

Police Chief Dan Isom said the officer had a graze wound to the arm. "He's in good spirits and he'll make a full recovery," Isom said outside Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where the officer was being treated.

The officer is 26 and has been on the force five years.

Isom said the man who lived at the home was shot by police in an exchange of gunfire. He said he did not know the identity of the man.

Isom said the man had a handgun when he confronted the two officers who arrived at his house on the western edge of the city in response to the call about a domestic dispute involving the man and his wife. …
