Carnahan ad turns up heat - It's "Wall Street Russ" versus "Payday Clay."

Three weeks out from the Aug. 7 primaries, those are the names each side has slapped on the other in the increasingly bitter Democratic fight over St. Louis' 1st Congressional District, between U.S. Reps. William Lacy Clay and Russ Carnahan.

The race descended into name-calling last week, when Clay hit Carnahan with the "Wall Street" moniker while digging up Carnahan's 2008 support of Wall Street bailout legislation, which Clay alleges favored the rich over working-class constituents.

Now Carnahan is hitting back with a new focus on Clay's controversial ties to the rent-to-own and payday lending industries. The industries have donated heavily to Clay's campaigns while Clay has become one of their strongest supporters in Congress.

"Lacy Clay has taken $80,000 from payday lenders and the rent-to- own industry," the narrator says in a Carnahan television ad running Wednesday and today. …
