FLORISSANT > Police chief to retire - Florissant police chief William Karabas is retiring at the end of the year.

Karabas, 73, has been chief of the department for 10 years and has spent more than 50 years in law enforcement. Before taking the top cop job in Florissant, Karabas served as chief in Brentwood, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. He started his career in 1961 as a police officer in Pine Lawn and was also an officer with the city of St. Louis.

Karabas officially announced his intent to retire Wednesday but had let the mayor know of his intentions a few months earlier. His last day as chief will be Dec. 31.

"I don't know how many years I have left, and I wanted to make sure I still had some time for leisure," Karabas said.

Evers said the doubling of fines for tickets issued under state law began Wednesday. Wentzville aldermen were expected to pass a similar municipal ordinance. (Mark Schlinkmann)
