MISSOURI > State board suspends doctor's license - Abid Nisar's medical license has been suspended until March 2014, the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts announced Tuesday. He is accused of potentially harming his patients by giving them unapproved cancer drugs.

After the suspension is lifted, Nisar will face an additional five years of probation which includes unannounced visits from board staff. The Illinois medical board last March suspended Nisar's license indefinitely, but he can reapply in March 2014.

Nisar, who has offices in Florissant, East St. Louis and Granite City, pleaded guilty in February to a federal misdemeanor charge of buying foreign prescription drugs. He was sentenced in May to two years of probation, 200 hours of community service and a $25,000 fine.

Nisar bought $352,504 in unapproved drugs in 2010 and gave them to his patients without their knowledge. Some of the drugs did not contain the active ingredient and were mislabeled, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Nisar is also ineligible to participate in Medicare and Medicaid for seven years and must pay back more than $1 million for submitting false claims for the cancer drugs to the government health insurance programs. (Blythe Bernhard)
