ST. CHARLES COUNTY > Man killed in rollover accident - Grant L. Hulett, 31, of St. Charles, died Friday when the vehicle he was riding in overturned, ejecting him on westbound Interstate 70 near Lake Saint Louis, the Missouri Highway Patrol said. Hulett was a passenger in a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Bradley W. Hulett, 25, of St. Charles. About 6:50 p.m. the younger Hulett swerved to the right to avoid another vehicle, then overcorrected and crossed three lanes of traffic and struck a median barrier, the patrol said. The Jeep rolled four times.

BELLEVILLE > Two charged in church damage - Two teens from Belleville have been charged in connection with damage July 31 at the New Freedom Baptist Church. Codie M. Engelke, 18, of the 300 block of North Fifth Street, and Edwin J. Renth II, 19, of the 200 block of North 14th Street, were charged with burglary and criminal damage to property. Engelke also was charged with a hate crime. Police said the pastor saw several juveniles enter the church at 2301 West Main Street that afternoon. Police found racial epithets written in the church and various acts of vandalism. Four juveniles and an adult were taken into custody. The juveniles were released to their parents; it was unclear Friday whether they face charges.

JENNINGS > Jail escape was brief - A prisoner at the Jennings jail was recaptured Friday about 45 minutes after escaping, officials said. Rovetta Stewart was being held in lieu of $1,000 bail for several charges of failure to appear in court. When a woman came to post bail for her sister, a different woman, Stewart told guards she was that sister, Jennings police Lt. Gene Neal said. The woman with bail money told officers Stewart was not her sister and Stewart bolted out the lobby door, Neal said. County police found Stewart hiding in bushes along Helen Avenue. Stewart likely will face additional charges, officials said.
