Davis Making His Case to Be No. 3 QB; Rams Notebook; Southern Miss Grad Gets Good Reviews in Preseason Debut

No telling what Broadway critics might have penned, but by football standards, Austin Davis' professional debut was a hit.

"It was great to get out there and play and just kind of slow the game down a bit," said Davis, a free agent rookie quarterback who is opening eyes at Rams training camp. "To be honest, practices have been a little faster, a little tougher to see than the game was.

"Obviously, being in the third group in the second half, the defense was very vanilla, but that was good. It was good to get out there and get some reps and some experience, because quarterback is all about experience and progressing. I have a long way to go, but it was a good start."

The game will fade from memory quickly otherwise, as the Rams lost 38-3 at Indianapolis. But Davis completed 12 of 18 passes for 84 yards in his inaugural game. He threw an interception, but it wasn't his fault. The receiver, Mike Campbell, failed to break to the ball.

"He was real active, has a good feel for what we're doing and, you know, he extended some plays with his legs, which is good to see," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. "At times, they brought some unique pressures and he had to flush and make some plays running around."

Davis is in a tussle for attention with at least one other quarterback, if not two. Kellen Clemens got playing time in the absence of injured Sam Bradford last season and entered camp as the backup-apparent. Tom Brandstater figured to be third in line while Davis, a Southern Mississippi product, was at the coffee bar.

That batting order may be in the process of changing. The fact Davis saw as much playing time, the fact he made some plays, the fact he continues to look good in practice has not hurt his chances.
