McReynolds Named to Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs Post

Though she was the top contender for the post, state Secretary of Military and Veterans Affairs Rita Aragon was not chosen as interim director of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs.

Instead, members of the state's War Veterans Commission - the group that oversees the ODVA and its seven veterans centers - chose a former center administrator as the agency's interim director.

Commissioners voted 6-3 to name John McReynolds interim director Friday during their meeting in Ardmore. McReynolds was one of three candidates for the job.

McReynolds worked for the ODVA for 10 years before retiring in 2009. McReynolds was the former administrator of the Lawton-Fort Sill veterans center.

Aragon said she was disappointed that she wasn't picked for the job, but praised McReynolds.

"I believe Mr. McReynolds will do an outstanding job," Aragon said. "Fixing the ODVA and restoring the public's faith is a large task."

The state's veterans care system has come under intense scrutiny after The Journal Record published accounts of abuse, rape, neglect and deaths at several veterans centers. …
