Mykaela Arellanes, Holt softball

A sophomore center fielder, Arellanes helped the Indians win their tournament for the fourth consecutive season. Batting left- handed, she went 13-for-17 (.765) and stole 11 bases as Holt went 4- 1. That included big performances in wins over O'Fallon Christian (2- for-3, 4 runs, 1 steal), St. Charles West (2-for-3, 2 steals), Visitation (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 steals) and Fort Zumwalt North (3- for-3, 2 runs, 3 steals). Arellanes is batting .700 and is among the area leaders in runs scored (16) and steals (16).

Ryan Baker, Francis Howell swimming

A junior, Baker excelled in two dual meets last week. Monday against Timberland, he broke the school record in the 200 freestyle (1:46.81). Then Wednesday against Burroughs, he won the 200 medley (2:00.10) and the 100 butterfly (55.57) and was on the 200 free relay that broke a school record (1:32.72). Baker, who has qualified for state in seven events, has received academic All-America status through USA Swimming. At the state meet last season, Baker won the 500 free and was sixth in the 200 IM.

Michael Ball, Gateway Tech football

A 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior, Ball racked up a career-high 310 yards rushing and three touchdowns and intercepted two second-half passes to lead the host Jaguars to a 41-30 win over Public High League favorite Vashon. The versatile Ball, who plays multiple positions, is among the area leaders in rushing yards (430) and touchdowns (five). A first-team all-conference pick last season, Ball is being recruited by several schools, including Southeast Missouri State and SIU Carbondale.

Gino Bono, Northwest soccer

In the first week of the season, Bono, a senior forward, had seven goals and two assists in helping the Lions to an undefeated (2- 0-1) start. After kicking off the season by scoring twice in a 2-2 tie against Seckman, Bono had five goals and an assist in a 10-0 pounding of DuBourg and netted an assist in a 2-0 triumph over Washington. …
