HILLSBORO > Man gets 20 years for fatal shooting - Robert Brooks, 43, was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting his fiance, Amanda Cates, in 2006 in the home they shared in Crystal City. In 2007, a Jefferson County jury found Brooks guilty of second- degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison. But in 2010, the Missouri Supreme Court ordered a new trial, finding that prosecutors made improper comments at Brooks' trial about his refusal to give investigators a statement after he was advised of his right to remain silent. At Brooks' second trial in June, another jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action and recommended 10 years for each count. Circuit Judge Gary Kramer ordered that the terms run consecutively. Brooks was a Calverton Park police officer. Cates, 26, was a resource officer at Normandy Middle School.

Copeland's attorney, Scott Evans, argued that Copeland should be placed on probation. Evans said that was the wish of Copeland's now ex-wife, mostly in the interest of their two children. Circuit Judge Jon Cunningham denied the request, calling Copeland's behavior "a horribly dangerous, outrageous act."
