"Hotel Transylvania" * (PG; 1:30) - In this laugh-starved animated farce, single father Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) runs a hotel for monsters. When his teenage daughter (Selena Gomez) meets a nerdy human hiker (Andy Samberg), he tries to scare away the young suitor. (MCT)

"Liberal Arts" *** (NR; 1:37) - Debut writer/director Josh Radnor (of TV's "How I Met Your Mother") is likable but low-key as a 30- something bookworm who returns to his old college campus and falls for a forthright co-ed (standout Elizabeth Olsen). Richard Jenkins as a retiring professor, Allison Janney as a predatory one and Zac Efron as a campus hippie earn extra credit in small roles. (Joe Williams)

"Looper" *** (R; 1:58) - Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a hard-boiled hitman in the year 2042 whose next scheduled victim is his older self (Bruce Willis), who arrives from the future to kill a boy who will grow into a tyrant. As a deadpan variation on "The Terminator," this wayback machine lacks the heft of a classic but is worth taking for a spin. …
