West Virginia's offense roars

Whether it's the Orange Bowl or playing at home, No. 11 West Virginia is comfortable with scoring a point a minute.

Geno Smith threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers to a 69-34 win over Marshall in Morgantown, W. Va., on Saturday in the Mountaineers' highest-scoring opener.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen will have plenty of things to tweak after the opener. Just not his quarterback's play. Smith kept the momentum going from his six-TD performance from the Orange Bowl, when West Virginia beat Clemson 70-33.

The senior completed 32 of 36 passes without an interception and set a school record for career completions and touchdown passes before sitting out most of the fourth quarter.

No. 7 Florida State 69, Murray State 3 - Lonnie Pryor, James Wilder Jr., and Debrale Smiley combined for seven rushing touchdowns to lead Florida State to a win in Tallahassee, Fla. Pryor ran for three TDs, and Smiley and Wilder added two apiece.

No. 18 Ohio St. 56, Miami (Ohio) 10 - Braxton Miller rushed for 161 yards, a record for an Ohio State quarterback, and threw for two scores including Devin Smith's highlight-reel, one-handed catch as the Buckeyes ushered in the Urban Meyer era with a win.

No. 17 Nebraska 49, Southern Mississippi 20 - Taylor Martinez threw for a career-high 354 yards and matched his high with five touchdown passes to lead the Cornhuskers to their nation-leading 27th straight opening win. Nebraska played the last three quarters without Rex Burkhead. The 1,300-yard rusher last season went out with a sprained ligament in his left knee after opening the scoring with a career-long 57-yard run.

No. 12 Wisconsin 26, Northern Iowa 21 - Montee Ball rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, and No. 12 Wisconsin needed a big defensive play to survive a fourth-quarter scare from Northern Iowa in Madison, Wisc. …
