ST. LOUIS > Deputies charged with assault in off-duty incident - Two deputies with the city marshal's office have been charged with assaulting a man in an unprovoked attack. Charles J. Watkins, 54, and Cory L. Upchurch, 41, are charged with jumping out of a vehicle on Sunday at 1118 Mallinckrodt Street and punching and kicking the boyfriend of Watkins' daughter.

Each was charged Thursday with a single misdemeanor count of third-degree assault.

Sam Dotson, the mayor's operations director, said he has recommended the city's personnel director place the two on forced leave until more can be learned or the charges are resolved. He noted the deputies were not on duty or acting in their official capacities when the alleged incident occurred.

The city marshal's office is the law enforcement arm for the municipal court.

WOOD RIVER > Man is charged in fatal stabbing - A Wood River man has been charged in the fatal stabbing of an elderly man Friday morning.

Justin M. Thompson, 23, of the 100 block of South Ninth Street, was charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a 67- year-old Wood River man who also lived in the same block. It is not known what the relationship was between the two men or if they lived together. The victim's name was not immediately released.

Wood River Police said they received a 911 call at 9:40 a.m. that a man had been stabbed at a home in the block where the two men lived. When they arrived, they found the victim dead. A short time later, Thompson was taken into custody. No bail had been set.

CLAYTON > Man accused of assaulting officer - A man is facing a felony charge after breaking the hand of a St. Louis County police officer during his arrest during a drunken driving incident.

Allen Castile, 45, of the 300 block of Saddle Back Drive was charged Sept. 14 with assault on a law enforcement officer for his actions during the June 14 incident, according to court documents.

Police stopped Castile in a parking lot near Laclede Station Road and Big Bend Boulevard. He registered a 0.248 percent blood alcohol content during a breath test, according to the documents. He has at least five prior DWI incidents. During his ride to the police station, police say he kicked and broke the windshield of a county police car and then kicked and head-butted a police officer. …
