Sun Is Going Down on the BCS Era; with System on the Way out, It Faced Less Controversy This Year in Tide-Irish Matchup; BCS CHAMPIONSHIP

MIAMI As he anticipated what appeared to be an enticing matchup Monday night between top-ranked Notre Dame and No. 2 Alabama at Sun Life Stadium, BCS executive director Bill Hancock earlier in the day wondered if the game might break a television ratings record for the national title game.

Never mind that that had happened only eight times in the previous 56 seasons . The system constantly was criticized for its arcane way of determining the participants, collateral issues surrounding the other BCS bowls, and simply the fact it hadnt yielded to a playoff concept that rules every other sport.

More substantial to the change, Hancock said the makeup of the selection committee remains to be determined.

But its likely to have 15 to 18 members and many parallels to the Division I mens basketball committee, which features conference commissioners and athletic directors. …
