FAIR: It was a tough weekend for wacky ideas. First the Treasury Department put the kibosh on the trillion-dollar coin (more about that shortly) and then the chief science guy at the White House Office of Management and Budget let all the air out of the Death Star balloon.

Some 35,000 Americans had signed a petition at the Obama administrations screwball-magnet We the People website urging the construction of a space-superiority and weapon system such as a Death Star. Not only would the project create jobs, but the ability to blow anyone, anywhere to kingdom come would have been a boon to national defense.

But Paul Shawcross, the OMBs chief of science and space, pointed out (a) the administration does not support blowing up planets; (b) a Death Star would cost $850 quadrillion (263 times this years entire federal budget) and could be destroyed by a single Jedi knight. No slouch at geek-speak, Mr. Shawcross noted that a Death Stars power is insignificant next to the power of the Force. …
