Being Well: Lori Longo, Chaparral Energy, Oklahoma City

Article excerpt

Lori Longo is a senior engineering technician with Chaparral Energy in Oklahoma City. She has worked for the company for a little more than one year, and said she has spent her professional life in and out of the oil industry. It's her job to keep track of wells in Chaparral's Southern region. She uses proprietary software to keep tabs on the company's wells, but also on competitors' wells nearby.

She also volunteers in and out of work. At the company, she is the floor's safety representative. In the community, she donates her time to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. She said she likes to garden, spends time outdoors hiking and takes her dog, Jack, for walks. She follows a mantra well-known in physics: A body in motion stays in motion.

Longo said she has always been mindful of fitness, but Chaparral makes it easy for her to maintain an exercise routine. Like several other employees, Longo uses a standing workstation. The adjustable apparatus allows her to stand for a few hours in the morning, and then move her computer and keyboard down to a sitting height for a few hours in the afternoon. Because Chaparral employees work four nine-hour days and one four-hour day, the adjustable workstation helps Longo maintain mobility throughout the day.

"Midafternoon when you crave a nap, that is the time I stand up at my desk and do stretches," she said. "It is good to be with a company who wants you to be healthy, because prevention is an important part of a healthy lifestyle."

Longo said she used to work out at the company's on-site fitness center, but noticed it is getting crowded lately. So she joined Integris Health's Pacer fitness center and works out with a trainer two days per week. She also works out a couple of days on her own there. Chaparral pays for a portion of employees' membership fee at Pacer, which is part of what prompted her to join, she said. …
