Ellis blanks Senators

Dan Ellis made 33 saves for his first shutout in more than two years, and Eric Staal scored to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 1- 0 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

Making only his second start of the season in place of Cam Ward, Ellis earned his 13th career shutout and first since Nov. 9, 2010, against Toronto while he was with Tampa Bay.

Stars 4, Coyotes 3 Jaromir Jagr and Jamie Benn scored in a shootout to lift Dallas over Phoenix.

After netting four goals in the opener against Phoenix, the Stars had scored only nine times in the next six games before breaking out.

Antoine Roussel scored in his NHL debut, rookie defenseman Brenden Dillon had his first career goal, and Michael Ryder also scored as Dallas snapped a four-game losing streak (0-3-1).

Caps 3, Flyers 2 Troy Brouwer and Wojtek Wolksi scored third- period goals, and Braden Holtby made 29 saves in Washingtons victory over the Flyers. Bruno Gervais and Brayden Schenn scored for the Flyers (2-6). …
