Anne Zike is a senior accountant at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City, and has been at the nonprofit for four years. Last year she received a promotion, to implement a new accounting system. She tests and upgrades the department's financial system, so she spends much of her time preparing for the planned launch in September.

"With this project I'm pretty much always busy," she said.

She said she is a competitive person, so when the wellness coordinators rolled out an Olympic-themed challenge last summer, she decided to join. Previously she attended yoga and Zumba classes. But in the Olympic challenge, team members earned points for attending fitness classes every day of the week.

She started attending classes five days per week: Mondays are bicycle spinning, Tuesdays are yoga, Wednesdays are boot camp, Thursdays are Zumba and Fridays are kickboxing. Zike said she used to be intimidated by kickboxing and boot camp classes, but now they are her favorites.

"I like the intensity of boot camp," she said. "It is hard every single time. I love that challenge.

"And kickboxing is a good stress reliever: You get to punch and kick things," she said with a laugh.

Attending the five weekly classes and earning points for the Olympic challenge led her to ask questions about nutrition and look more critically about the food she ate. She started scrutinizing sodium and sugar in foods, and measured her protein intake to help rebuild muscle. The small challenges added up to an overall improvement in her fitness and nutrition, Zike said.

"All of these mini-goals were awesome," she said.

Though she said she has always led a relatively healthy lifestyle, the wellness challenges at OMRF helped her improve her awareness of her diet and exercise. …
