The Big; Reveal

Article excerpt

A pregnant woman walks into a party supply store and hands the helium balloon clerk a sealed note from her doctor.

We dont open it until they leave the store, says Chelsea Moon, store manager at the Party City store in Ballwin. Her staff will be the first to learn, before the expectant mother or father, the gender of the baby their customer is carrying.

Rather than a doctor announcing: Its a ___! to newly minted parents in a delivery room, its increasingly common that the first to know will be a retail store clerk or bakery worker. They play a critical role in the biggest surprise party trend to hit the maternity circuit in years: The Gender Reveal Party.

Its become a real huge thing, Moon said. The point of the party is to gather the expectant couples close family (and possibly friends) and make a surprise group announcement about the gender of the unborn.

There are myriad ways to hatch this surprise, most already documented by couples on social networks and photo-sharing sites such as Pinterest.

Meagan and Jesse Goodfellow of Wentzville took one of the more popular approaches. They gathered their immediate families at a local restaurant and instructed each person to wear either pink or blue, depending on their guess of the babys gender.

(There were 17 pinks vs. three blues.)

They handed out sealed cards Meagan had made the night before. Meagan and Jesse wore gray, and she had also decorated a gift box posing the question: Boy or girl? Together, they opened the box and a big pink heart balloon floated out.

Its going to be a girl.

Everyone was really excited, Meagan said. Jesses mother had brought two pink outfits for the baby, so confident was she in her guess. Her father was dressed in blue but unbuttoned his shirt after the announcement to reveal a pink shirt underneath.

We thought it was a neat way to let them all know, Jesse said, even though the couple had found out in advance during the ultrasound. …
