Statue of Libertys reopening is delayed

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar says the security screening process for visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island must be worked out before a decision is made on when to reopen the attractions, which have been closed since Superstorm Sandy. Salazar visited the sites on Tuesday. Both Liberty Island and Ellis Island have been closed since suffering major damage in the storm. The Statue of Liberty itself was unharmed.

Kelly wins Democrats nod for Jacksons seat Former Illinois legislator Robin Kelly captured the Democratic nomination Tuesday in the race to replace disgraced ex-U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., after a truncated campaign season where she got a boost from New York City Mayor Michael Bloombergs super PAC. The nomination all but assures that shell sail through the April 9 general election and head to Washington, because the district is overwhelmingly Democratic. The Republican nomination was also being chosen Tuesday night.

One shot near college campus One person was wounded in a shooting Tuesday at a school apartment complex near Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., a school spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman, Martha Hunn, said the gunman was still at large late Tuesday night.

Hunn said dispatchers received a call about 7:20 p.m. about the shooting. The student was taken to a hospital, and residence halls were put on lockdown.

Team bus crashes near Boston A bus carrying the University of Maine womens basketball team ran off a highway near Boston on Tuesday night, seriously injuring the driver. State police said 22 other people on the bus, including students, had minor injuries.

Coach Richard Barron was treated for minor facial cuts, and two players and the director of basketball operations were taken to a hospital for observation, the university said.

Police said it was believed the driver had a medical episode. He was taken to a hospital in Boston. …
