U.S. hockey team wins at world juniors

The United States routed Germany 8-0 Thursday at the world junior ice hockey tournament in Ufa, Russia, behind a goal and two assists each from Alex Galchenyuk and Riley Barber.

This was the first Group B game for the Americans, who are tied for first place with Canada. The Canadians downed Germany 9-3 on Wednesday. The U.S. plays Russia today.

Also Thursday, Switzerland beat Latvia 7-2 in Group A.

All is quiet in the NHL After some communication during the Christmas holiday period, the NHL and the players association still havent made any plans to resume negotiations in their labor disptute that has kept the season from beginning.

The belief is if a deal isnt struck within the next few weeks, the entire hockey season could be lost for the second time in eight years.

St. Louisan Meek third in speedskating nationals Olympian Jilleanne Rookard won the womens 3,000 meters and Emery Lehman took the mens 5,000 on the opening day of the U.S. Long Track National Championships in Kearns, Utah.

Lehman won the 12 1/2-lap mens race in 6 minutes, 7.06 seconds. Jonathan Kuck finished second at 6:27.14 and Patrick Meek, a graduate of St. Louis University High, was third in 6:30.39.

Rookard was timed in 4:11.88 over 7 1/2 laps at the Utah Olympic Oval.

Maria Lamb, a 2006 Olympian, finished second at 4:12.61. Petra Acker was third in 4:13.94, a personal-best.

Beckham taking his time Nearly a month after leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham is in no rush to find a new team as the former England captain mulls over a number of serious proposals from soccer clubs across the world.
