Yanks' Granderson suffers broken arm

New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson, in his first at- bat of spring training, suffered a broken right arm when he was hit by a pitch Sunday from Toronto's J.A. Happ and is expected to be out until the first week of May.

Yankees officials said Granderson, whose 43 homers last season led the team, could be out 10 weeks which means he'd miss about a month of the regular season. It's a major blow for the club, which already is without third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip surgery) until at least the All-Star break.

Manager Joe Girardi said Brett Gardner probably will start the season in center. Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera, in the competition for the fourth outfielder spot, could have increased playing time.

Meanwhile, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is about two weeks away from playing in a spring game for the first time since breaking his ankle last fall.
