SLU's McCall Works Overtime, Gets Shot Clicking

WASHINGTON While St. Louis U. was putting together one of the longest winning streaks in school history, guard Mike McCall was putting together one of his own.

Starting with the game at Temple on Jan. 12, McCall went nine games without breaking into double figures in scoring, his longest run of reduced scoring in his three seasons at SLU. McCall was still contributing in other ways hounding opposing point guards while posting a 2-to-1 assist-turnover ratio he just wasnt scoring.

But McCall is a shooter and a scorer, so he went back to work. He stayed after practice every day to put up 100 more shots, 3- pointers, free throws, off the dribble, off the catch, all sorts of situations.

The extra work paid off. Hes been in double figures the past three games to help 18th-ranked SLU run its winning streak to 10 games. He hit two big 3-pointers in the Butler game, the first after Butler had stopped an 8-0 SLU run and was looking to break SLUs second-half momentum.

That was huge, forward Cody Ellis said. It was such a big momentum changer for us. We called it out of a timeout, it was a great call by Coach, and Mike did a great job of nailing it. I set the flare for him, tried to get him open and he did great job of getting his feet set and knocking it down. Hed been in a bit of a slump, so that game hopefully knocked him out of it.

Ive gotten in the flow, McCall said. I think it has something to do with staying after practice and shooting more. The shots have been falling and Ive been shooting it pretty well.

McCall scored 15 against Virginia Commonwealth and 18 against Butler. SLU has four wins over top 25 teams this season those two plus another win over Butler and one over New Mexico and McCall is averaging a team-high 13.5 points in those games. Hes made five of his past 12 3s and leads the team in that category at 42. …
