Permits for New Homes Jump in St. Louis Area

ST. LOUIS The St. Louis home building industry continued its strong comeback in February with permits for new homes up 51 percent in February, compared with a year earlier, on the Missouri side of the St. Louis metro area.

For the first two months of the year, permits are up 49 percent, the Home Builders Association of St. Louis said Tuesday.

An increasing demand for new homes is prompting builders to put more construction crews back to work in order to replenish inventory, said Charlies Boyce, association president. I expect the industry to continue on a gradual, upward trajectory this year.

St. Charles County led the way, with permits issued for 130 new homes in February. That was nearly three times the 46 permits issued in St. Louis County, which had the next highest number.

The strong local results mirrored national numbers, as building permits climbed to the highest level in almost five years.
