St. Louis County Chooses New Collector of Revenue

CLAYTON St. Louis County has a new chief tax collector and this time, it is someone who has paid his own taxes.

The county announced Thursday that it hired Mark Devore, 51, as collector of revenue to replace Stacy Bailey, who resigned in December after revelations that she had not paid her personal property taxes for years and was in bankruptcy.

County spokeswoman Martina Price said officials had thoroughly vetted Devore, of O'Fallon, Mo., to make sure he did not owe taxes and was not in financial trouble.

A check of tax and court records by the Post-Dispatch showed that Devore's real estate and personal property taxes were paid on time and that he had not filed for bankruptcy.

Devore had 28 years of experience in debt collection in the private sector, most recently as a supervisor with the law firm of Gamache & Myers, which specializes in collections. The firm is based in south St. Louis County.

In a statement, the county's director of revenue, Eugene Leung, said Devore had been chosen from more than 200 applicants. …
