Art to Play Starring Role on Film Row in Oklahoma City

Article excerpt

A district that has a history rich with movie stars and bright lights will soon be on display for the area's first-ever Final Friday art walk event.

Starting April 26, Film Row will be the next Oklahoma City district to host an art walk, which will be held monthly on the last Friday of every month. The district involves the west part of downtown, including Walker Avenue, SW Second Street, Classen Avenue, NW First Street/Colcord Drive, and Sheridan Avenue.

At the first event, which will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., artists and performers will be seen throughout the district at 12 different businesses, including The Paramount OKC at 701 W. Sheridan Ave. Owner Melodie Garneau said her restaurant and venue will feature open mic night, an improvisational group, music in the cafe, and even a wine tasting.

"We're really excited about it," Garneau said. "We're excited about getting people down here so they can see what's going on in Film Row."

Some of the other businesses set to be open during the event include the Individual Artists of Oklahoma gallery, Critical Mass Productions, Dunlap Codding, OKC Pride, The Exchange OKC, KOSU, McKenzie & Co., Oddfab Design Lab, Joey's Pizzeria, Carpenter Square Theatre and The 404.

The Paramount building was originally the site of the executive offices for the Paramount film company. The building includes a screening room where films were once shown to movie theater owners for possible purchase. The screening room is now the site of live performances and movie showings.

The district has been under revitalization and is ready to open its doors to show people what the area has to offer.

"I think people will be impressed when they come down here and see what's going on with the arts community," Garneau said.

Kendall Brown, executive director of Individual Artists of Oklahoma, has been working on organizing the event since she started at the gallery. …
