Griffin to have knee surgery

Robert Griffin III will have surgery today to repair a torn ligament in his right knee, according to the Washington Post. Griffin has a torn lateral collateral ligament and the surgery will determine whether he has damaged the ACL, a source reported.

Baylor coach Art Briles confirmed the same details in a USA Today interview.

A torn LCL would require a rehabilitation period of several months, possibly extending into training camp and the start of next season. A torn ACL is a more severe injury, typically requiring nine to 12 months of recovery.

Jacksonville hires GM * The Jaguars have hired Atlanta director of player personnel David Caldwell as general manager, charging him with turning around one of the league's worst teams. His first move will be deciding the fate of coach Mike Mularkey. Owner Shad Khan tabbed the 38-year-old Caldwell a day after a third interview. A formal news conference is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Jets fire offensive coordinator * The New York Jets' housecleaning will bring three new coordinators in 2013. Tony Sparano was fired as offensive coordinator after one season in which the offense ranked among the league's worst. Sparano was hired last March to replace Brian Schottenheimer and take over an offense that struggled mightily. Instead, the former Miami Dolphins head coach was unable to jump-start the running game or figure out a way to use Tim Tebow. Also gone is defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh.

Cowboys fire defensive coordinator * Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has been fired after his injury-depleted unit struggled in a pair of season-ending losses that kept the Cowboys out of the playoffs for a third straight year. Ryan was let go a day after running backs coach Skip Peete was fired. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett announced the move in a release.

Keim is Arizona GM * The Arizona Cardinals have promoted Steve Keim to general manager. The 40-year-old Keim had been the team's vice president for player personnel. …
