Senate passes bill to collect taxes on online sales

The Senate sided with traditional retailers and financially strapped state and local governments Monday by passing a bill that would widely subject online shopping for many a largely tax-free frontier to state sales taxes.

The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 69 to 27, getting support from Republicans and Democrats. But opposition from some conservatives who view it as a tax increase will make it a tougher sell in the House. President Barack Obama has conveyed his support for the measure.

Under current law, states can require retailers to collect sales taxes only if the store has a physical presence in the state.

'Girls Gone Wild' creator may go to jail * "Girls Gone Wild" creator Joe Francis faces up to five years in Los Angeles County jail after a jury convicted him Monday of nearly half a dozen misdemeanor counts in connection with assaults on three women.

Francis, 40, was found guilty after a two-week jury trial on five charges three counts of false imprisonment, one count of dissuading a witness from reporting and one count of assault causing great bodily injury stemming from the Jan. 29, 2011, incident.

"Whether a celebrity or not, you will be held accountable for your misdeeds," City Attorney Carmen A. Trutanich said in a statement. "The victims in this case should be commended for their courage in stepping forward and reporting these attacks, and for not being intimidated from seeing this matter through the justice system."

Sentencing will take place Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Illinois GOP chairman resigning * According to published reports, Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady is planning to step down for personal reasons. The reports have Brady announcing his resignation today.

Republican state Rep. Jim Durkin told the Chicago Sun-Times that Brady is "leaving on terms that he's imposed on himself." Durkin says Brady, who he calls a dear friend, wants to spend more time with his family. …
