RIP Cupples 7? * Unless a buyer with lots of money and imagination turns up, say, now, the historic but dilapidated Cupples 7 building downtown could be demolished within weeks.

As expected, Frank Oswald, the St. Louis deputy building commissioner, issued Monday an emergency declaration that calls for removal of Cupples 7. Oswald's memo says a demolition permit "will be issued forthwith."

Engineers and city officials say that $4 million to $8 million could be needed just to stabilize the seven-story building's brick walls. Tens of millions more dollars would be needed to renovate the building's timber-frame interior, which is in ruins.

Mayor Francis Slay's office said that absent a buyer who will act now to stabilize Cupples 7, it will be demolished in early June.

City officials said they will need about a month to hire a demolition contractor and prepare the site, at 1014 Spruce Street. …
