SLU baseball earns share of A-10 title

With a 2-1 Saturday win over visiting champion Charlotte, St. Louis University claimed a share of the regular-season baseball crown and earned the top seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.

The Billikens, who finish 36-18 overall, tied at 17-7 with Charlotte and Rhode Island atop the league standings. For the second consecutive year, SLU is the No. 1 tournament seed and next play at 9 a.m. on Thursday in Charlotte against the winner of the Wednesday first-round game between No. 4 Xavier and No. 5 George Washington.

SLU trailed Charlotte (34-21) in the fifth when freshman Braxton Martinez (Francis Howell North) tied it with a sacrifice fly. The next Billiken hitter, Alec Sole, reached on an error as the go- ahead run scored.

Sophomore Nick Bates picked up the win, with freshman Matt Eckelman retiring the last six hitters for his third save. (Staff report)

The Tigers, who got a run-scoring single from freshman Emily Crane (Troy) on Saturday, need one more win to advance to their sixth straight super regional. They will take on Hofstra (45-12) today at 1 p.m., with the if-needed game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (Staff report)
