CHARLESTON, Ill. * Three Metro East seniors made major impressions at the Illinois Girls Track and Field Championships at Eastern Illinois University on Saturday.

Two, Markita Rush of East St. Louis and Emmonnie Henderson of Edwardsville, made them in grand style. The third, Jessica Jump of Metro-East Lutheran, was of the heartbreaking variety.

Rush set a state record in the 300-hurdles, while Henderson won both the shot put and discus throw for the third consecutive year. Henderson also set a state mark in the shot put.

For Jump, a months-old leg injury reared its ugly head and stopped her from reaching her state title goals. The injury happened in the 100-meter run, but Jump still participated at limited speed in the 400 and 200.

Rush's title in the 300-hurdles wasn't a huge surprise, but it wasn't expected. She did win the event as a sophomore in Class 3A and was second in Class 2A as a junior.

"I knew I had to get out quick," Rush said. "I had to go out harder than I did in the 100 (hurdles). I could feel her (second- place finisher Shamier Little of Chicago Lindblom) coming on, but I had prepared myself for this. To win this race my senior year is amazing. It's awesome."

Rush's time of 42.14 set the state mark. In fact, Little's second- place time of 42.29 also broke the old record.

Henderson's shot put heave of 50-9.5 broke the mark she set in the prelims of 49-7.75. She won the discus throw with a 156-07. "It wasn't what I wanted (in the discus), Henderson said. "But some kids never get to see first place, so I'm thankful. I feel I left my legacy on the state meet. …
