Alexander Wins Fight by TKO after Seventh Round; Bout Was Not for St. Louisan's Title as Opponent Didn't Make Weight; BOXING

ATLANTIC CITY, N. J. * Devon Alexander hurt his left hand in the first round but still made quick work of his opponent on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

In what turned out to be a non-title fight, Alexander dominated his opponent, Englishman Lee Purdy, winning by technical knockout when Purdy did not answer the bell for the eighth round.

Alexander was in charge the whole fight, with the Compubox stats showing him landing a whopping 157 power punches to just 77 for Purdy. In all, Alexander made good with just about two punches for every one that Purdy got through. In stopping the fight, Purdy's corner said they didn't want their boxer to take more damage.

Two of the judges had Alexander winning all seven rounds and leading 70-63 when the fight was stopped. The other judge had given Purdy one round, the fifth.

"I wanted to impress tonight," Alexander said. "My left hand was on point in camp. When I hurt my bicep that strengthened my left hand so it would have been popping real hard. But I hurt it. I had to set it up softly. I wanted to use my hook and my upper cut. But I couldn't.
