Cards to Put Garcia on DL, Braced for Long Absence

Article excerpt

Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia will go on the disabled list Sunday with intensifying pain in his left shoulder that could soon lead to the surgery he sought to avoid last fall.

Garcia felt enough discomfort in his pitching shoulder Friday night during his 5 1/3-inning start that he considered asking out of the game while pitching it, he said. The Cardinals announced Saturday that a scan of the joint that morning revealed the same structural issues that caused concern last season and led to several doctors suggesting surgery. He will go on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and visit Dr. James Andrews early in the week.

The Cardinals are bracing for an extended absence.

He threw three simulated innings Saturday and could be set to make a rehab start in early June. Carpenter is being conditioned as a starter and Mozeliak agreed that the righty has increasingly become a factor. Garcia is the second starter in the past seven days to go on the DL, joining Jake Westbrook, who will miss at least two more starts with elbow inflammation and scar tissue buildup.

"When we were asking these questions two weeks ago, it's like who's spot is he going to take? …
