Meteorologist injured in tornado

The next time meteorologist Mike Bettes talks about the power of tornadoes on the Weather Channel, he can speak from personal experience.

Bettes was nursing minor injuries Saturday, including stitches in his hand, a day after the SUV that he and two photographers were riding in was thrown 200 yards by a twister in Oklahoma. The Weather Channel said all the occupants were wearing safety belts and walked away from the banged-up vehicle.

It's the first time one of the network's personalities has been injured while covering violent weather, spokeswoman Shirley Powell said.

"That was the scariest moment of my life," Bettes said. "I had never been through anything like it before, and my life passed before my eyes."

Dr. Who to go * Matt Smith is leaving "Doctor Who" after four years of portraying the time-traveling hero on the long-running British sci-fi adventure series.

Smith, the 11th actor to portray the wandering Time Lord from Gallifrey, will leave the role following the show's 50th anniversary special in November, BBC announced Saturday. The character will regenerate in the Christmas special.

"'Doctor Who' has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke," Smith said in a news release. "I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years."

Breadwinners stick together * Fox News Channel anchor Megyn Kelly said Friday that she's offended by men's suggestion that children of working mothers don't fare as well as children with stay-at-home moms.

A Pew Research Center study released last week showing that women are now the primary breadwinners in 40 percent of households with children ignited a sharp debate on Fox with two of the network's most prominent women taking on male colleagues. It culminated in an electric on-air exchange Friday among Kelly, Fox contributor Erick Erickson and anchor Lou Dobbs. …
