SLU Eliminated from NCAA Baseball after Loss to Clemson

COLUMBIA, S.C. * St. Louis U. has figured out how to get to the NCAA baseball tournament, but winning there remains another challenge.

SLU was eliminated from the tournament on Saturday with a 10-2 loss to Clemson in a loser's bracket game in the Columbia Regional at Carolina Stadium. SLU finishes the season 41-21, matching the school record for wins in a season set last year, but failing in two efforts to extend the record.

SLU has reached the NCAA tournament three times in the past eight seasons after going 40 years without making it. But SLU has gone two and out in all three of those postseason competitions. SLU last won an NCAA tournament game in 1965.

"It didn't end the way we wanted to," said right fielder Alex Kelly, who went 3 for 4 with a double and a home run, "but we're grateful for the opportunity. We knew we had to play our best ball coming in here to win and we didn't do that. We didn't execute as good as we wanted to. It's tough, it's hard to swallow right now. …
